The Minster, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie has been elected as President of Ethiopia succeeding Ambassador Sahle-Work Zewde today.
Ambassador Taye has been appointed in today’s joint session of the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) and the House of Federation (HoF).
He is a long-serving diplomat working in various embassies as ambassador and advisor and has served the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Minister from February 8, 2024, till today.
Prior to the ministerial position, Ambassador Taye served Ethiopia as a Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2018 until January 2024.
Ambassador Sahle-Work Zewde is also a veteran diplomat who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 and began her career as Ambassador to Senegal with accreditation to Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and the Gambia.
Among other positions, she was appointed by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as his Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) in June 2018.
She has recently shared a controversial verse from a legendary musician, Mahmoud Ahmed that indicates a shrewd decision to be silent in times of dissatisfaction. She left her X’s (formerly Twitter) chamber by saying, “I have tried it for a year”.
