
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) says a deteriorating security situation in the Amhara region limits free movement and access to healthcare services.
The conflict between the federal forces and Fano militias has limited response interventions to the ongoing cholera and malaria outbreaks in the region, UNOCHA stressed.
“A significant increase in abductions, killings, and sexual gender-based violence is reported.
WHO is looking into reestablishing the Surveillance System for Attacks on Health Care (SSA) to ensure adequate collection and verification of all incidents, allowing for better advocacy against all attacks on health care.”
The authorities in Bahir Dar have reportedly imposed additional movement restrictions, especially during evening hours.
The federal government declared a state of emergency particularly in the Amhara region and ‘necessary’ throughout the country in August 2023 that ended in early June 2024. However, the federal government and lawmakers in parliament have not officially declared its ending.
